ISHR Seminar at the 2020 Rhetoric Society of America -- CFP PLUS 2019 ISHR Conference Reminders

1.  ISHR Seminar at the 2020 Rhetoric Society of America -- CFP

The International Society for the History of Rhetoric invites proposals from any non-U.S. members interested in leading its biennial seminar immediately before the 2020 Rhetoric Society of America (RSA) convention in Portland, Oregon. The seminar will convene throughout the day on Thursday, May 21, 2020, the day before the beginning of RSA. Seminar leaders are sometimes included in the RSA program, depending on the thematic fit of their work and the availability of speaker spots.

Here are the primary duties of the seminar leader:

+ The seminar leader must be in Portland, Oregon, for the beginning of the seminar (morning of May 20) and for as long as required at the RSA convention;
+ The seminar must be conducted in English (and primary sources must be provided in translation or bilingual form (e.g., Loeb));
+ The seminar leader will read applications from those wishing to take their seminar, decide whom to accept and reject, and email those results;
+ The seminar leader will design and structure the seminar time and communicate that design and structure to participants ahead of time.

Remuneration:

Together, ISHR and RSA will offer a stipend which is meant to cover transportation (which the seminar leader arranges independently), accommodation on nights not covered by RSA, meals, and an honorarium.

If you’d like to submit a proposal, please email the following items to the ISHR liaison to RSA, Michele Kennerly, at kennerly@psu.edu  before July 1, 2019:

+ Your name, academic position, and full contact details;
+ A three-page curriculum vitae;
+ A title for the seminar you propose, a paragraph of thematic text, a paragraph about what you likely would do with the seminar time (e.g., lecture, discussion, participant presentations).

2.  ISHR Conference

The deadline for conference registration at special rates has been extended to Wednesday, 19 June. PLEASE REGISTER! We need to know numbers for the hotel, reception, banquet, etc. Also let us know if you have a paper accepted but are not coming.

3.  The program schedule for 2019 ISHR Conference, New Orleans, 24-27 July has been posted here:2019 Program Draft. This is a draft, in that it lists only the presenters, presentation times, and names of the chairs only, without paper titles, etc. The completed program will contain the full paper title and university affiliation. At the moment there are still a few sessions and slots that are not filled for various reasons, and we will work to find suitable arrangements for these as opportunities arise. We do not otherwise intend to modify the program except in cases of cancellations, so please do not ask for changes except for genuine emergencies. Note: none of the papers have been removed at this time unless requested by the presenter.

Sessions chairs are listed on the draft and publication of this draft, and the listing will constitute a humble if awkward request to chair the sessions. Many will be asked to chair the session in which they are doing a presentation. Be sure to search for your name twice, once for your presentation and again to see if you’re being asked to chair a panel. This is not a problem for panels, of course. If you cannot chair the session, please let me know.

Electronic matters. Because we are staying at an American hotel, audio-visual charges for having a computer in the session rooms would have bankrupted the organization, so speakers wishing to use PowerPoint slides or the equivalent will have either to bring their own laptops or (better) arrange with the session chair or other session speaker to agree to put all PowerPoint files on one computer and thereby not have to switch computers between speakers. The hotel’s audio-visual team will have a technology staff on hand at all times.

4.  Tour discounts. Unique NOLA Tours will offer 20% discount on their tours, found at https://uniquenola.com/, if you book ahead using this code: ISHR19 . I am not endorsing this tour service and know nothing about it. Tours can also be arranged by the concierge at the hotel, and please check our ISHR Travel and Local Information page, https://ishr-web.org/aws/ISHR/pt/sp/conference_travel

Best wishes,

Malcolm
