Dear colleagues and friends,
You are warmly invited to an online presentation of The Subtle Subtext. Hidden Meanings in Literature and Life, by former ISHR President Laurent Pernot, translated by William E. Higgins (Penn State University Press, 2021)
On Monday, February 14, 2022, at 5pm CET.
In the words of Susan Jarratt (University of California, Irvine):
“In this lively and original work, Laurent Pernot argues that the production of double meaning is a far more wide-ranging phenomenon than we previously thought. Alongside the ‘figured speech’ of ancient Greek and Roman rhetoric, Pernot explores a wealth of cases from nineteenth- and twentieth-century literature, politics, and popular culture. From Michel Foucault’s parrhÄ“sia to the X-Files, dog whistles, and Pink Floyd: there’s much here to delight and instruct.”
The Institut für Klassische Philologie at the Humboldt University in Berlin has kindly agreed to host the presentation via Zoom, which will include presentations by Laurent Pernot on the aims of his book and by William Higgins about the challenges of translation. Dr. Caroline Petit (Warwick/HU Berlin) and Dr. Michele Kennerly (PSU) will introduce the session, which will be followed by a Q/A.
Please register by February 11 by emailing Dr. Caroline Petit caroline.petit@hu-berlin.de to receive the Zoom link.
PSU Press currently offers a discount of 30% on the book price on their website and on their British distributor’s (use code NR22):
