RSA Announces the 2017-18 Graduate Student Chapter Special Event Award Recipients
RSA annually offers $3,000 in Special Event Awards to its Graduate Student Chapters that have an event planned for the late fall or spring semester. This year, the RSA student representatives of the Board, Katie Irwin and Erica Fischer, with Board member Ronald Greene, reviewed the applications and selected the following winners. The selected proposals were those that articulated the event’s potential to attract teachers and scholars of rhetoric across departments and institutions, emphasized the event’s significance to graduate students and their professional development, and provided evidence of clear and detailed preparation. Congratulations to this year’s recipients!
Clemson University’s chapter will host the 2018 Carolina Rhetoric Conference. On February 9-10, approximately 100 graduate students from institutions in the greater Carolina region will participate in panel presentations addressing the theme “Rhetorics and (Counter) Publics” and attend a professionalization workshop focused on publishing in open access journals. Dr. Cynthia Haynes will deliver the conference’s keynote address. Interested parties can follow the conference on Twitter with the official handle @crc18official and #crc18.
Indiana University’s Ivie League will host the 2018 Midwest Winter Workshop. On February 3, 80 graduate students and faculty from rhetoric programs in the Midwest will unite in this annual tradition to share works-in-progress and attend panels related to publishing, teaching, and professional development. Indiana University’s Professor Emeritus Bob Ivie will deliver the keynote address.
North Carolina State University’s chapter will bring together rhetoric teachers and scholars from across North Carolina at its Rhetorical Listening for Social Change Unconference. Held this March 24, the Unconference will provide its student attendees the opportunity to share their research at any stage of development and to receive feedback from faculty.
Penn State University’s Arnold-Ebbitt Interdisciplinary Rhetoricians will host Camp Rhetoric on March 30-31. Titled “Precarious Times, Contested Identities,” Camp Rhetoric 2018 will allow its participants to workshop current projects, discuss professional development topics, and receive practical advice for writing grant proposals. Dr. Erin Rand of Syracuse University and Dr. Cristina Ramirez of the University of Arizona will both deliver guest talks throughout the two-day event.
Texas Christian University’s chapter will host their 2nd annual Winifred Bryan Horner Memorial Lecture on February 15, 2018. Dr. Shari Stenberg will speak about feminist rhetorics, pedagogy, and composition. This event will be open to the public and a seminar discussing Stenberg's recent work will follow the event.
