Title: Queer Rhetorics in the COVID-19 Era
Panelists: Aymar Jean Christian, Michaela Frischherz, Jo Hsu, & Jessica Kurr
Moderator: Jeff Bennett
Date: Friday September 11, 2020
Time: 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM ET
Description:
“Queer Rhetorics in the COVID-19 Era” is an extension of a forthcoming forum that engages queer lives, theory, and scholarship, in the context of the global pandemic. COVID may prove to be the defining event of the modern era and contributors to this panel contemplate the cultural ramifications, political consequences, and rhetorical implications of the crisis. The panelists explore the social reverberations of the pandemic by giving focus to a range of topics that include: racialization and epidemic logics, the reshaping of U.S. media ecosystems, the potential for pleasure in the midst of mundane chaos, and the homonormative economic frames that shape conversations about government relief. The forum will appear in its entirety later this year in QED: A Journal in GLBTQ Worldmaking.
Contributors to the forthcoming QED forum include Marlon M. Bailey (Arizona State University), Aymar Jean Christian (Northwestern University), Huiling Ding (North Carolina State University), Michaela Frischherz (Towson University), Leandra H. Hernández (Utah Valley University), Jo Hsu (University of Texas, Austin), Theodore Kerr (The New School), Jessica Kurr (Northeastern University), Marina Levina (University of Memphis), Lisbeth A. Lipari (Denison University), SAGE Metro Detroit, J. Blake Scott (University of Central Florida), Sarah De Los Santos Upton (University of Texas, El Paso), and Gust A. Yep (San Francisco State University). The forum is guest edited by Jeff Bennett (Vanderbilt University). QED is edited by Charles E. Morris (Syracuse University) and Thomas K. Nakayama (Northeastern University).
