Rhetorical Leadership
David Kaufer, Carnegie Mellon University

This workshop overviews leadership theories arising across various disciplines and in popular media. We explore the rhetorical roots of these theories in concepts such as ethos, invention and identification. We then consider the changing landscape of higher education and the need for rhetorically educated leaders to assume leadership positions over colleges, departments, major committees, and national organizations, including RSA. We finally turn to leadership opportunities outside the academy and ways in which rhetorically educated leaders can made a difference in various venues of government, for-profit, and not-for-profit work.
