RSA Announces Graduate Student Chapter Special Event Awards

RSA annually offers $3000 for Graduate Student Chapter Special Event Awards. Candidates for this award must be student chapters with RSA and have an event planned for the spring semester. Awards were determined by criteria such as: the quality of the application (clear planning/preparation), the event’s interdisciplinary focus and inclusiveness within and beyond its home institution, and an emphasis on graduate students and their professional development. This year the RSA student representatives, Katie Irwin and Erica Fischer, along with board member Jessica Enoch, reviewed the applications and selected the following winners. Congratulations, and we look forward to these events this spring!

Bowling Green State University’s Rhetoric Society of the Black Swamp will introduce their 5th annual fall conference theme “collaboration” with a guest speaker at their Reading and Discussion series on April 5. By introducing the theme in the spring, the chapter hopes to inspire productive conversations leading up to the conference on October 21.

Illinois State University is hosting a Methods and Methodologies Conference on April 7 that will unite local and regional students and scholars for day-long activities including workshops and roundtable discussions. Dr. Michele Simmons will deliver a keynote address that explores the roles of rhetorical methods and methodologies both within and beyond the field.

San Diego State University’s Department of Rhetoric and Writing Studies will host its annual Landmark Lecture series this March 2. The chapter has invited Dr. Ekaterina Haskins and Dr. Christa Olson to discuss visual rhetoric and the rhetoric of social movements and national identity.

Texas Christian University's Winifred Bryan Horner Rhetoric Society will be hosting its inaugural Memorial Lecture and Seminar this February 9. The chapter is bringing to campus Dr. Ehren Pflugfelder to deliver the lecture, and graduate students will spend the day with rhetoric faculty discussing research, professionalization, and interdisciplinarity.

Texas Woman’s University’s ERGO-RSA is hosting a spring speaker series, “Raise Your Voice: Women, Rhetoric, and Action,” featuring Dr. Michele Lockhart and Dr. Tina C. Mims, from February through April. Designed for an audience of high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, this series is one component of a larger campaign at TWU that seeks to encourage productive networks among young women and to support the next generation of women leaders. University of Iowa's Bruce Gronbeck Rhetoric Society is hosting this year's Midwest Winter Workshop (MWW) during January 27-28. An annual tradition among rhetoric programs in the Midwest, the MWW brings together faculty and graduate students from 12+ institutions for a weekend of professional panels, paper workshops, and general collegiality. Dr. Raymie McKerrow will deliver this year's keynote address.

University of Maryland's Chelona RSA is curating a Rhetoric in the Archives Graduate Symposium for April 13-15. Beginning at the University of Maryland campus in College Park and extending out to the greater Washington, D.C., area, this event allows participants to discuss archival research with faculty and research librarians, to tour local archives, and to connect those trips to their own research interests during roundtable discussions.
