ISHR - Professor Marc Fumaroli

Professor Marc Fumaroli

With sadness I inform you that professor Marc Fumaroli, one of the founders of our Society in 1977 and President in 1985-1987, has passed away on June 24, at the age of 88. After a period at the University of Paris-IV, Sorbonne, Marc Fumaroli was elected to a chair in Rhetoric and Society in Europe at the Collège de France, a post he held from 1986 until his retirement in 2002. He was elected member of the Académie française in 1995 and of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres in 1998. Together with Alain Michel, also a co-founder of our Society, he was a driving force behind the revival of the study of rhetoric across disciplines in France and abroad, and he has received numerous prizes and awards to honour his achievements in the study of rhetoric and European culture at large.

A biography and list of key publications can be found on the website of the Académie française http://www.academie-francaise.fr/les-immortels/marc-fumaroli.

Our Society will remember Marc Fumaroli with great respect and gratitude.
